Contact lenses ‘see’ blood sugar levels for diabetics

Millions of Americans who have diabetes may be able to get rid of their painful blood testing devices in favor of a prototype being developed at the University of Akron. These lenses sense the glucose in your tears that, if not being metabolized correctly, would build up just as it would in your blood. The contact lens would recognize the problem and change color to alert the wearer. […]  neat always knew tears would come in useful.

Aerosmith - Walk This Way

Every time this song plays I can’t think of anything else but Eric from That 70’s Show (I am a big fan of the first seasons of this show) as Steven Tyler, and the moment when he attempts to open Donna’s room door by kicking it and he falls onto the floor.

Maybe it’s because of that simple image or maybe it’s the music, or maybe it’s the mixture of the two, but this tune automatically sets me in a good mood.

Enjoy it!!

Intergalactic - Beastie Boys

Since it’s Star Wars Day I figured Intergalactic was the perf- I’m sure everyone has heard the news by now that MCA from the Beastie Boys is no longer with us. Adam Yauch passed away from cancer today at the all too young age of 47. While I’ve never sat down to an entire Beastie Boys album they have always been present in my life. I had to choose this song because I remember watching TRL and this video was requested all the time. To me it’s iconic Beastie Boys: clever, zany, a bit out there and all around good fun. If you weren’t aware Adam (under the moniker Nathanial Hörnblowér) actually directed most of their music videos; this one was no exception.

Whether you’re a devoted fan or a casual listener it’s sad news for all and I’m glad to be able to honor his memory on Soundboard.

Carolina Chocolate Drops - Hit ‘Em Up Style (Blu Cantrell)

I had the privilege of seeing this amazing old-time string band perform back in 2010 and have been obsessed with them ever since. They completely captured me with their outstanding commitment to musicianship, their preservation of bluegrass music as a key part of the culture in my hometown (Appalachia) and not to mention just really good music. Rhiannon Giddens, who you hear on this track, has some truly stunning vocal talent in addition to being phenomenal on both the fiddle and banjo.

Aside from being completely obsessed with the group, I specifically chose this track because I’m always excited when a great cover comes along and surprises me. The blending of modern R&B lyrics with old-time string instrumentation, super cool beat-boxing and Giddens’ powerhouse vocals tells an interesting story about the way music has evolved over time. While some things change, there is still just something magical about stripped-down, flat-out, great music.
